What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is an overuse injury that causes small tears in the tendons on the outside of the elbow. Despite the name, it’s not limited to athletes! Anyone who uses their hands and arms repetitively, from typing at a computer to swinging a hammer, can develop it. Pain often worsens with gripping, lifting, or twisting motions, and can be confused with “golfer’s elbow,” which affects the inner elbow instead.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy looks beyond the site of pain to address the underlying factors that overload the tendons. Through gentle hands-on techniques, I release tight muscles, restore healthy movement in the wrist, forearm, and shoulder, and improve circulation to support tendon healing. I also assess posture, movement patterns, and daily activities that may be contributing to strain, helping patients adjust load and mechanics so your elbow has the chance to recover. By combining manual therapy with guidance on equipment, activity pacing, and corrective exercises, osteopathy not only reduces pain and inflammation but also helps prevent flare-ups, allowing you to get back to work, sport, and daily life with confidence.

BOOK COLIN, OSTEOPATHIC PRACTITIONER

Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture

As an acupuncturist, treating tennis elbow involves addressing both the local pain and the underlying imbalances that contribute to it. Acupuncture targets specific points to reduce inflammation, restore circulation, and relieve pain, while incorporating gentle movement of the elbow during treatment helps improve mobility and function. For chronic or persistent cases, additional points and therapies like Tuina massage, cupping, and gua sha may be used to relax muscles, enhance blood flow, and support overall healing. By combining these techniques, acupuncture can provide meaningful relief, restore range of motion, and help prevent future flare-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Tennis elbow usually presents as pain and tenderness on the outside of your elbow, which may worsen when lifting, gripping, or twisting your forearm. A proper assessment from a healthcare provider is the best way to confirm.

  • No—despite the name, most people with tennis elbow don’t play tennis. It’s caused by repetitive strain on the tendons of your forearm, often from work, daily tasks, or other sports.

  • Mild cases may improve with rest, but recurring or persistent pain usually needs treatment to fully heal and prevent flare-ups.

  • At Qi, treatment may include osteopathy, acupuncture, or injection therapies, depending on your needs. These approaches help reduce pain, promote healing, and restore mobility.

  • Every case is different. Some people feel relief within weeks, while others may need a few months for full recovery. A tailored treatment plan speeds up the healing process.
