Amy Kubanek, Fletcher Pilates Teacher

Amy Kubanek, Fletcher Pilates TeacherBook an appointment with Amy

Amy’s role at Qi is to help people feel more in tune with their bodies. She has noticed that when people come to her feeling pain or distress, often they have become disconnected from the many sensations in their body. And those who aren’t in pain may have movement patterns that are either inefficient, or could cause irritation in the future. Interestingly, Pilates was originally called “Contrology”, the art of controlling every muscle in your body. Pilates is proven to be a great tool for making lasting changes in the body and gaining more control because of its specificity and specialized equipment. Amy’s personal approach is slow and full of curiosity. Rather than dictating what exercises you should do, she joyfully investigates what kind of movement feels right for each person.

Amy comes with an array of disciplines to share, including: Pilates, nervous system healing, dance, yoga, therapeutic ball release, and the Melt Method®. Amy has advanced level training in the full Fletcher Pilates® repertoire, as also training in rehabilitative protocols. She offers over 15 years experience working with a wide variety of conditions using the Pilates method. Amy’s sessions can work to relieve the effects of: core instability, postural imbalance and repetitive strains.

Treatments and modalities used: Rehabilitative Movement, Fletcher Pilates®, Pilates Reformer, Tower, Spine Corrector, Visualization, Pedipul, and the Melt Method®. Fletcher Pilates® is internationally recognized for its innovative tools as well as for its artistry.

Cody Cummings, RMT

Cody Cummings, RMTBook an appointment with Cody

In 2012 Cody successfully completed 5 years of study, and is currently writing his thesis to receive his designation and Diploma of Osteopathic Manual Practitioner DO(MP) through the British Columbia School of Osteopathic Manual Therapy Inc. Cody incorporates knowledge from osteopathy, massage therapy, and yoga philosophies to provide a clinical experience in a casual atmosphere. Cody has a general practice using manual therapy to treat everything from acute to chronic conditions, and also to facilitate health maintenance. Techniques used in the treatment are based from an osteopathic approach; cranio-sacral therapy, fascial release techniques, Muscle Energy Technique(s), visceral manipulation, and osteoarticular (joint) mobilization. These techniques aim to benefit and harmonize all systems of the body: musculoskeletal, digestive, circulatory, cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine (hormonal), and reproductive systems.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy is “A natural medicine which aims to restore function in the body by treating the causes of pain and imbalance. To achieve this goal the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner relies on the quality and finesse of his/her palpation and works with the position, mobility and quality of the tissues, Natural Medicine is a term used to convey the idea that with an osteopathic treatment, nothing is added (medications or remedies) or subtracted (surgery) from the body. Instead, the osteopathic philosophy embraces the notion that the body is naturally able to heal itself. The practitioner of Traditional Osteopathy works with the body to enhance this natural ability to self regulate and self-heal.” Canadian College of Osteopathy (website, 2012).

Clients are encouraged to prepare for the treatment by wearing comfortable clothing for the treatment (sport bra, running shorts, underwear, or swimsuit), filling out the health questionnaire before hand (at least 10-15 minutes before the treatment time starts) and being well hydrated.

Matthew van der Giessen, RMT

Matthew van der Giessen, RMTBook an appointment with Matthew

My approach to massage therapy is called Somatic Patterning. It begins by paying attention to what is happening in your body right now. This includes the symptoms that you would like worked with, but also in what way your body is trying to move towards greater functionality – it’s underlying somatic patterns.

In a somatic patterning approach to massage, I draw upon a wide range of modalities that work effectively with body patterns, from very light, energetic and fluid based approaches to those that use deep, direct pressure. I choose the contributions each approach as they best support your body’s reorganization and its movement towards greater functionality.

You can expect practical and focused assessment at the beginning of your treatment series as well as periodical “check-ins” throughout the treatments to make sure that you are reaching the goals that will allow you to function more fully in life.

The problem solving approach of Somatic Patterning, along with its focus on “working with” your body makes it effective with chronic pain and injury, as well with deep energetic healing.

Tedi Fisher, R.AC

Tedi Fisher, R.ACBook an appointment with Tedi Fisher

After over a decade of practicing and teaching yoga I came to realize that my studies were not truly complete. I started to explore different modalities that would help both my students and me. The fundamental philosophy Traditional Chinese medicine is to seek balance. Balance both internally, helping the mind and body and externally, connecting with our environment and community. TCM is a natural medical system that has withstood thousands of years of practice and results. We look at each person as a complex and individual system, which means each person, is treated uniquely based on his or her constitution, lifestyle and symptoms. TCM is empowering in that it tells your body how to heal, it directs your body to areas that need healing and allows the innate intelligence of your system to complete the process. You truly heal yourself.

The beauty of TCM is that it can treat much more than you think. From injuries, to skin conditions, digestive imbalances, weights loss and mental health. TCM is capable of aiding the most stubborn of ailments. The many modalities include acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese herbs, cupping, gua sha, tui na (massage) and lifestyle and dietary counselling.

My journey started with a fundamental yoga practice followed by completing a degree in Kinesiology, to becoming a yoga teacher and certified personal trainer, and finally a 5 year diploma of Dr of Traditional Chinese Medicine including an internship at the Tsu Chi hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. I’m looking forward to sharing my love of health and healing with you.

Brenley Nella, RMT

As a recent graduate from Vancouver College ofMassage Therapy (VCMT), I have always been interested in health care and pain management. Competing on the Ontario Ski Team for 3 years, I later received my Bachelor in Human Kinetics from UBC. My approach to therapy combines my background of anatomy and physiology with the natural healing process of the body to provide an effective and relaxing treatment. I spend time examining postural dysfunctions and areas of pain before creating a unique treatment plan to benefit the patient both short and long term. My treatment styles include myofascial release, trigger point therapy and principle swedish massage techniques. My interests include repetitive stress injuries, soft tissue injury and recovery, postural imbalances, headache and migraine care, as well as athletic maintenance and sports injury.
