About Orthotics
Q: How are the custom foot orthotics created?
A: After taking a history of your symptoms, past traumas or injuries, and previous experience with orthotics, the chiropractor will do an examination of your feet. This may include watching you walk, squat, or recreate the actions of your specific sport. Next, a foam cast of your foot will be made with your ankle and foot in "talar neutral". We then send the cast to a local podorthic lab where they create the custom foot orthotic with any additions necessary for your problem.
Q: What conditions can be helped by custom foot orthotics?
A: If you are suffering from heel pain, arch pain, pain in the ball of the foot, numbness in the toes, foot fatigue, knee pain, shin splints, bunions, calluses - orthotics may help. The orthotic is designed to correct abnormal motion of the foot and can be custom created to provide support for areas of your feet that may need it more because of your specific architecture. The chiropractor will tell you if she thinks orthotics can help correct your specific problem.
Q: Do I need a doctor's prescription or referral for custom foot orthotics?
A: Generally, no. If you have extended health benefits, often there is coverage for custom made orthotics. In some cases you may require a prescription from a health professional (medical doctor, chiropractor, or podiatrist/chiropodist). It is best to check with your extended medical provider to see what requirements there are for you to get reimbursed for your custom foot orthotics.
