About Chiropractic
Q: I don't like the sound of 'cracking' is there any other treatment the chiropractor can use?
A: The 'cracking' or 'popping' sound from a traditional chiropractic adjustment results from the release of gas from the joints, much like when you open a can of pop. The chiropractor has a number of other lighter force, 'crack-less' adjusting styles that can be used. In addition to traditional chiropractic, the chiropractor also uses Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) which is a muscular technique that can relieve pain, stiffness, and scar tissue in the muscles and around joints.
Q: Will the treatments hurt?
A: The majority of people do not find any pain from chiropractic adjustments, and many even find instant relief. Active Release Technique has been described as the 'good kind of pain', much like a deep tissue massage. Depending on your individual response to treatment, you may find a small amount of soreness after treatment, that is typically relieved within a day, and relieved with the application of ice. Some people feel nothing but relief of pain and discomfort.
Q: Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
A: No, chiropractors are primary care physcians, meaning you do not need to see anyone else to be referred to a chiropractor.
Q: Once I start seeing a chiropractor do I have to come for life?
A: No. The choice to continue maintainence or wellness care is your own. You will come to a point in your treatment where the pain is gone, your body is functioning optimally, and you have been given exercises and stretches to maintain your health. At this point you may decide to discontinue care, or you have the option of coming for regular 'tune-ups' to keep yourself healthy.
Q: What kind of training does a chiropractor have?
A: Chiropractors must have a minimum of three years of university education before they continue with a four year program (Doctor of Chiropractic) at chiropractic school, for a total of 7-8 years of training. In addition, our chiropractor has taken extra training in Active Release Technique as well as custom orthotics. The chiropractor is regularly taking continuing education courses to add to her knowledge base.
